Chapter 9

“ARE YOU sure you two want to do this?” Casimir asked as they walked down the path toward the pack vehicles.

“I think we have to,” Vladimir said with more confidence than he felt. He was worried about what they might find, and maybe even more about what they wouldn’t. If this was the vehicle Frankie had used to get to the area, maybe there would be clues about where Frankie came from and how he got there. And there might even be something that would jar Frankie’s memories loose. Of course, there could be nothing… or worse, some sort of danger. “We have to know, Casimir. Frankie deserves to know.”

“I don’t doubt it. Just asking to be sure.” Casimir turned to Frankie. “Sorry for talking around you. What do you want? You’re the one who needs to be sure about this.”

Frankie stopped and, to Vladimir’s surprise, simply yawned. “Yes, I want to know.” He had been doing that all day, and the closer it got to them leaving, the worse the fatigue had become. The two of them had had a rather athletic evening, but they had both slept well afterward. “I guess I worked pretty hard today.”

“We all did,” Casimir said. “You sure you’re up to this? We could go tomorrow.”

Vladimir shared the concern. They were going to need to be on their toes if they found the car.

“No.” Frankie straightened up. “Let’s go and get this over with. The sooner we find out something, the sooner we can figure out what my life will be moving forward.” He seemed more determined as they reached vehicles.

Two trucks stood inside a roughly built carport. They were largely out of the rain and snow, but the sides were open. Vladimir climbed into the tan truck and sat in the middle, while Frankie drove and Casimir took shotgun.

Frankie turned the key, and the old engine fired up on the first try. He backed out, and they slowly traveled down the rough logging trail. The road had been built some forty or fifty years ago, maybe longer—the last time parts of this area were logged. The ruts were jarring, but the truck was more than capable of handling it.

Vladimir hated trucks. He was much more at home on four legs than four wheels. His belly often got funny when he rode, but he wasn’t going to tell the others that. He hadn’t eaten in some hours, so he would be fine. Frankie seemed like a cautious driver, going slow over the bumps and ruts until they broke through the trees onto a more traveled dirt road. He was able to go faster then. Casimir guided him farther north, and they passed the entrance to the mining camp, doing their best not to draw any attention to themselves.

“I don’t like that place,” Frankie said.

Casimir nodded. “I don’t either, but the darkness I feel isn’t coming from them.”

“How do you know?” Vladimir asked. He had felt it too and had thought the men were the source.
